Seeing the Light: Why Lighting Is Important for Senior Citizens

As people age, they consider home improvements that will make their living spaces both safer and more enjoyable. Some senior citizens choose to downgrade to a smaller and easy-to-manage home, while others improve the safety of their current household by making sure railings are tightly installed, rugs are put on slippery floors and stairs are covered in soft carpet. One factor that is often overlooked is the lighting throughout the home. While it may seem simple, lighting is one of the most important features of the home, especially as people get older.

According to SeniorJournal.com, senior citizens need three times the amount of light than younger people do in order to see clearly. This is because the lenses on the eye thicken and the pupils shrink, causing the eyes to react slower to lighting conditions. Senior citizens with dementia also suffer from additional eye impairment because they have a difficulty in distinguishing objects from their backgrounds.

Not only is lighting necessary for senior citizens because of the effects of aging, but they also need adequate lighting for safety. Senior citizens are at an increased risk for slips and falls, so it's important that they can see clearly throughout the home.

Where Should Seniors Have Lighting?

It's essential that every room has adequate lighting for both safety and comfort, but there are certain areas that require careful attention. Make sure that stairways and walkways have enough lighting, as these are some of the most common places for slips and falls. Ideally, seniors should have a light switch at both the top and bottom of the stairs so that they can switch the lights on and off without being stuck in the dark. The lights should point toward the stairs so that each step is well lit.

The kitchen is another room that needs adequate lighting, as this is where seniors prepare all of their meals and handle appliances. Seniors must be able to read the labels on food items, buttons on appliances and also be able to handle cutting and chopping confidently. To increase lighting, consider installing lights underneath cabinets. Other good choices include low-hanging lights to go over a breakfast bar or recessed lighting in all corners of the kitchen.

Another room that deserves attention is the family room or den, where reading, watching television and relaxing is done. There is no need for seniors to strain their eyes when engaging in their hobbies, so choose lighting that will complement activities. For example, floor lamps that have 3-way bulbs are ideal, since each bulb can be positioned differently, providing light from a variety of angles.

Nightlights are also important to have throughout the home, especially because seniors find themselves getting up during the night to use the washroom. Consider the areas that are dark and often traveled through during the late hours, such as hallways, stairs and bedrooms. Nightlights are easy to place in both high and low outlets to provide sufficient lighting, at least until a senior can reach the light switch.

What Types of Light Bulbs are Best for Seniors?

The standard and most basic type of light bulb is an incandescent bulb. What makes an incandescent bulb a great option for seniors is that it is easy to change, easy to keep clean and fits in standard lamps and fixtures. Because incandescent bulbs contain no mercury or lead, they can be disposed of or recycled with the regular trash.

Fluorescent light bulbs are another great option for seniors because they are efficient, produce little heat and last up to 20,000 hours. A longer life means seniors won't have to change the bulbs as much. Fluorescent light bulbs do contain mercury however, so it's important to dispose of them properly.

Turning Light Bulbs On and Off with Ease

Light bulbs and fixtures aren't the only important factors to consider; seniors must also think about how their light bulbs will be turned on and off. If possible, make sure that all light bulbs can be turned on using a light switch so that the room is well lit upon entering or exiting. As an added benefit, choose to install dimmers onto light switches so that the intensity of the light can be altered using the switch.

Other great options are rocker switches, which are larger than standard switches and can be turned on and off using an arm, elbow or even a cane. If there are rooms where the lights are not hooked up to a light switch, clap-on lights should be considered. These friendly alternatives make it easy for seniors to gently clap their hands in order to activate light bulbs.

How to Safely Change a Light Bulb

Providing a senior citizen's home with enough light is not only essential for safety, but it also allows seniors more independence and confidence. Best of all, once proper lighting is installed, seniors can maintain their light bulbs and fixtures themselves. To change a light bulb is simple and requires no tools, as long as the bulb is in a lamp or fixture that does not contain a glass reflector. If a glass reflector is present, a small screwdriver can be used to loosen the screws and remove the bulb.

1. Turn off the electricity and let the bulb cool for 5 minutes.
2. Hold the base of the bulb firmly with one hand, while turning it counterclockwise until it is released from the socket.
3. Insert the new light bulb into the socket, making sure it fits snug.
4. Turn the light bulb in a clockwise direction until is locked in.
5. Switch the electricity to "on" and make sure that the bulb is working properly.

What to Look for When Choosing Light Fixtures

There may not be much that seniors can do about existing lighting, but if updating fixtures or purchasing a new home, there are certain light fixtures to consider. Look for ceiling fixtures that do not contain globes around them. These need to be removed and cleaned often in order to maintain their look and proper lighting. Not to mention, in order to reach these fixtures, seniors will need a ladder or step stool, which only increases the risk of slips and falls.

Floor lamps make great lighting options since they are easy to maintain. Light bulbs can simply be swapped out and a cloth or paper towel can be used to wipe down the bulbs and fixtures. Best of all, floors lamps are inexpensive, can be matched to any décor and can be moved throughout the home.

Wall sconces are other great alternatives to ceiling lighting, especially in stairwells and bathrooms. Wall sconces make it easy to change out light bulbs and most models have openings on both the top and bottom. Sconces are easy to clean, have decorative appeal and provide ample lighting, especially is awkward places and corners.

Proper lighting is vital for the safety and independence of senior citizens. Fortunately, senior centers and retirement homes have improved their standards in regards to lighting, but it's important that the homes of seniors are not ignored. Take the time to consider new and updated light bulbs and fixtures, as well as increasing the wattage where applicable. Ultimately, seniors will find their homes more enjoyable and comfortable with these minor home improvements.

Tennis Racquet String Tension - Tips on How to Decide

Tennis Racquet String Tension - Tips on How to Decide

Click Here FLV MPlayer - Free Download

ItemTitle

Tennis racquet string tension is a commonly misunderstood issue but a very important consideration for your racquet. What racquet string tension should I use? Well, when it comes down to it, it really is a matter of personal preference, but here are some guidelines and facts to keep in mind. First, there is generally a tension range that is provided by the tennis racket manufacturer and is usually located on the throat of the tennis racket. If you ever find yourself unsure or struggling to decide what tension, a number smack dab in the middle of the recommended racquet string tension is usually a good one to start with. You can then increase or decrease your string tension until you find something that feels good.

Since all tennis rackets recommend different tensions (they are generally somewhere in the 50 or 60 pound range), there is not one tension that can be recommended. You can only use the following guidelines. Lower tension increase power and higher tensions increase control. With a lower tension, the racket acts almost like a trampoline. The ball hits the racket, the strings quickly form a small pocket (relative to the tennis string tension) and your swing and strings shoot the ball out of the pocket. Obviously, this is a little over exaggerated, but it is a metaphor to how the strings respond with a lower tension. This all results in a little less control.

Racquet string tension that is on the high side causes the racquet to act more like a board or "brick wall". This tight racket string tension causes the ball to flatten out more, which allows the strings to have a better bite on the ball. This, in essence, provides more control. Many players prefer tighter strings but it does have a board like feel that you may not like. It is also important to keep in mind that racket string tension will feel different with different rackets. Some tennis rackets are flexible while others are stiff. Your current tension may feel very different on a different racket even though they have the same recommended string tension.

Tennis string tension really becomes a matter of personal preference and trial and error. And it starts all over again if you get a new tennis racket. So just remember the basics:

1. Higher string tension means reduced power but more control

2. Lower string means more power but reduced control

Now that I have said all of this, I will throw a kink into the mix. These guidelines really apply to those tennis players who are passed the beginning stage of tennis and are a more intermediate or advanced player. A beginner could be hitting balls all over the place but a higher or tighter racket string tension is not going to help them out with better control. A beginner would most likely benefit from a lower tension because the strings will be more forgiving and help with the number of off center hits that they have. I would suggest that a beginning tennis player stick with the mid-range string tension that is recommend for the tennis racket.

One of the fastest growing sports today is Nascar racing. While I am a gigantic sports fan, Nascar was not something that I paid a lot of attention to in the past. However, with Danica Patrick making the move from Indy car racing to Nascar, I may just become a big Nascar fan after all. As I speak with other fans of racing, they seem to indicate that having a favorite driver is what really holds your interest in the sport, so I guess it is the same as having a favorite baseball or football team in that sense. Like some big football fans hold Super Bowl parties, Nascar fans hold race parties. Of course, these Nascar parties, like all parties, require decorations. Since lighting has become a big part of any occasion, could Nascar party lights be far behind? Of course not.

I would expect that anyone decorating for a racing party would begin much the same as a fan of any other sport. You adorn your home with memorabilia of your favorite team in addition to the normal team logo items that are available. I am also sure that you utilize some images and logos of Nascar as a whole so that your guests are not too put off if they happen not to be a fan of the same driver and race team as you.

When I thought about where to go to purchase Nascar party lights, I began with a search of the Internet and started at Amazon.com. What I found was a couple of generic offerings of string lights that included lights depicting checkered flags and a red and white race car. These and the other string lights I found consist of a ten light set with alternating covers on a twelve foot light string. Much like your usual string Christmas lights, they are constructed like an extension cord so up to two additional sets of string lights can be added. Also available at Amazon are string lights that are white covers with a driver's number painted in black. These seem rather bland for a sport that likes to paint its cars in all kinds of flashy colors and schemes. Besides that, they do not have the Danica Patrick model so I decided to move on.

A further search of the Internet did yield some better results as far as finding light strings with covers depicting more authentically painted cars of some favorite drivers. However, the strings are not as long but do contain the same number of lights. The cars my initial search found belonged to drivers such as Matt Kenseth, Jimmy Johnson and Carl Edwards. I am sure a more thorough search will produce results locating the cars of most of the more popular drivers. Since my search has yet to locate the Danica Patrick string lights I am looking for, I will continue to hold off on the purchase of my Nascar party lights until sometime in the future when Danica makes her way to the senior circuit and becomes more of a main stream driver than just another pretty face.

How to String Lights on a Christmas Tree

The Holiday season is the best time of year, decorating my home and the Christmas Tree. So how do you string lights on a Christmas Tree? On we go to the fine art of stringing Christmas Lights on our Trees....and yes, it can be considered an art. And to some a fine art.

Make sure that before you begin, to have everything you need on hand. This will eliminate not having something you need while you are the ladder. So we will begin with the ladder, make sure you have a sturdy step ladder or small ladder handy. You will need this while you are wrapping the upper branches, even with a small tree, being on a ladder makes stringing your lights much easier.

You will obviously need your lights, an extension cord if the socket is not close or a step on off/on switch cord, makes lighting your tree easier and some patience.

Would you be surprised to know that it is recommended that you start stringing your Christmas Tree lights at the bottom? We had always started at the top. Reason being...you can follow the electrical outlet with the string of lights and not have too much or too little left over from stringing from the top. Never thought of it that way before. You will also be able to start with the correct male/female connections, ever string lights and end up with two female ends?

When decorating your Christmas Tree, always start with the lights. The lights are first thing that should be put on before garland or ornaments. Before you start, make sure that the lights are in working order, nothing worse than putting the lights on the tree and half the strand is not working.

As you string your lights use a weaving motion one light under a branch and the next light over, under and over. Tuck the cord into the branches so the cord does not show.

Estimate your space as you work your lights into the branches, stagger and space your rows so that there are no bare spots or clumps of lights together. Be especially careful not to clump the lights together at the top of the tree. The top of the tree should be the showplace for your topper.

If you decide you need more lights on your Christmas Tree, use additional strands and repeat the process of weaving from the top of the tree to the bottom.

Not sure how many lights you need, a quick rule of thumb is to take the height of your tree and times by 10. For example, a six foot tree would approximately 60 feet...I know I go way overboard on the amount of lights on my tree but just can't help it.

Now that you have finished stringing and are satisfied with the lights on your Christmas Tree, it is time to decorate your decorate your tree with ornaments, garland and whatever tickles your fancy....

Best Christmas Lights - Indoor & Outdoor Decoration Ideas

Have you made up your mind about your Christmas Light decorations now that the Festival season is almost on you? Don't be left out. You do not want to be the odd one out in your neighborhood when it comes to Christmas decorations, do you? You may have the ones you used last year nicely stored in your basement or store space. If so go ahead and check whether they are still usable. There are many ways these could now be out of commission.

If these are usable then all well and good, go ahead with your planning. If you did not have any last year now is the time for you to plan out things for this holiday season.

Think of a good theme which may or may not be for both indoors and outdoors. You can certainly go for two different themes altogether, but a common theme will look better and will be less complicated too. The outdoors will certainly take up more of your attention, because it will be a tad complicated because of the harsh outdoor conditions at this time of year. Regardless, it is one thing which will help you to share the fun and spirit of the season with others in your neighborhood.

Your plan would reflect what sections of the house or garden should be decorated, what type design is best for the outdoors and indoors, which trees, plants and flower pots should be fitted with decorations. You will need to know where your power can be linked from, and if nowhere is available what modifications you should go for. There are a host of other considerations which will depend on your individual requirements.

Now is the time to think about a theme for your Christmas Light decorations. The theme naturally has to blend with the physical features like Trees, garden ornaments if outdoors and if indoors various furniture and the built in features. Some common themes you can consider are;

o Magical Winter land- A theme where you can incorporate Snowman figurines, Reindeers and sleighs, even Santa Claus if you feel like it. Cool blue and white lights in every form will form a suitable back drop, but all colors would blend in well with this. One can easily add items which you yourself or your family members make and get these incorporated in your decorations. In the alternative many items made of synthetic material are available if you fancy them. Whatever it is the decorative lights will have the final say in bringing out the fun and laughter the occasion demands.

o Nativity Theme- The key issue of the festival is the nativity and is therefore an appropriate theme to put your mind too early on in you planning! If you want to make the decorations Solemn, whilst still bringing out the joy of the coming of Jesus the Christ, there is no other theme better suited. The birth of Jesus Christ is a joyous occasion and gaily decorations of Christmas Lights are therefore not out of place! The traditional Creche has to be the pivotal decoration. Lot of tiny blinking stars, and a few spotlights with concealed indirect lighting thrown in would be most appropriate

o Trendy Green theme- With the current consciousness on sustainability and natural products this is an ideal occasion to let others know of your feelings about the issue. Your children will get an opportunity at home level to experience what it is all about. It is a good theme to spread the message that man has no right to destroy what God has created. Lighting naturally will be green, with lots of low power consuming LED lights and colorful CFLs thrown in.

o Or any other which may emphasize your individuality- Here you are free to be more individualistic and creative. You know the best the topography of your outdoors and that of the neighbors. You are free to select lighting to suit your own theme.

You have a multitude of choices for decorative lights. Traditional C7 and C9 lamps, which you have grown up with, will bring about nostalgic feelings too. This is the least trouble maker perhaps of all types, except when it comes to the electricity bill!

The smaller mini lights in strings are good for any occasion, not only for Christmas. However if a tiny bulb comes loose or breaks the whole series will black out! For the Green Decorator and the ones with an eye on the electricity bill the ideal is the LED light, a newer entrant to the scene. Slow to get damaged, either due to mishandling or longer usage, these come in different colors as well. If your theme is Green this is a must.

Whatever the theme you decide on it is prudent to select decorations that you can expand on next Christmas season. If the whole family can take part in the preparations what better pleasure can you get than that? Christmas Lights are electrically operated and it is most important to take the safety measures, in line with your local regulations, at least when your do your installation. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Extra Large Outdoor Christmas Lights

Samsung Galaxy
ItemTitle

For some of us, there are very specific reasons why we want to use extra large outdoor Christmas lights. Although they are generally not used for most homes, many homes actually need them. XL outdoor Christmas lights are very popular for various kinds of situations. For example:

o Churches
o Businesses
o Any location that is far from the street

Decorating Churches with Outdoor Christmas Lights

Of course, a church generally celebrates Christmas! For that reason, you want to share your love of the holiday with everyone who passes the church. Unless you live in a highly urban area, most churches have a very large front lawn. This lawn is perfect for displaying Nativity scenes. In addition to your large decorations, you will also need extra large outdoor Christmas lights to complete your display.

For Your Business

Like many businesses, you probably have a very large parking lot in front of your business. This creates a problem for showing your holiday spirit. You might not want to have huge plastic decorations on the outside of your business. However, you can add some classic touches like lights. For this reason, you will want to buy extra large outdoor Christmas lights for your business. The smaller lights are barely visible across the parking lot from the street.

Homes

Most homes have a smaller yard. The front yard is generally less than 12 feet from the sidewalk to the front door. However, if you live in an area with extra large front yards, you'll also need extra large outdoor Christmas lights. Smaller lights can get swallowed up in the distance and will be barely visible to any of your neighbors driving by.

Try a Theme That is Simple and Easy

Part of the appeal of the Nutcracker for many people is the beauty. This makes it an easy theme to build around for your big Christmas displays. Many Christmas decorations are a little bit garish and focus on the children. However, the Nutcracker evokes for many a love of winter, snowflakes, and wearing velvet coats. It's an older and classic theme you can't go wrong with. Winter is a time of year to be celebrated in and of itself. If you're looking for a Nutcracker theme, it is best to avoid traditional Christmas decorations. Using outdoor Christmas lights is usually all the Christmas a Nutcracker theme can really handle. The focus with the Nutcracker theme is simply "sparkle".

Christmas Lights Design - Adding Twinkle

Samsung Galaxy
ItemTitle

Have you grown tired of your steady-on Christmas lights?

Perhaps it's time to add a little twinkle!

When designing your Christmas light display, there are several aspects of design to keep in mind as you make your lighting plans. Early in the process you'll choose the style of lights you want to use based what you like - from traditional C7 and C9 Christmas light sets, to mini lights to the latest in LED lighting. Christmas light lovers have never had so many choices. Next you need to consider a color scheme.

The most popular color is transparent with multi, red, blue and and green not too far behind. New upward trends in purple, pink, and teal are making the lighting future very exciting.

So, you've selected the types of lighting you want to use, you've decided on color and now you wonder, "what about twinkling and movement in my lighting display?" or perhaps you are thinking,"how do I drive my neighbors crazy with twinkle lights".

There are a wide variety of ways to add movement to your Holiday lighting. Let's take a quick look at a few of them.

1. Turn your steady mini lights into twinkling lights. That little extra bulb with a red tip is a flasher bulb. It causes all the lights on the string to turn on and off simultaneously.

You don't need more than one flasher per line but if you have a longer mini light set that is wired in sections, you can put a flasher in each section of bulbs.

2. Mini lights also come with built in controllers. These sets commonly have 140 lights and have multiple functions like chase, fade, slow fade, steady on and more. These light sets are like cayenne pepper and unless you are using them on your Christmas tree - that's classic - you should be cautious not to overuse these spicy lights.

Unless, of course, you like a carnival atmosphere in your lawn. In which case, go for it. Remember, those neighbors?

3. C7 and C9 Christmas light sets can be set up with 2-3 lines offset by 50% or 30% of the spacing between the individual bulbs and connected to a multi channel controller that will cycle throught the 3 channels. This will give your lights a marquee effect. (This is also a good approach for outlining signs.)

4. Lastly, one of the nicest and most elegant ways to add twinkle to your lighting is to sprinkle in a few C7 or c9 twinkle lights into your transparent bulb display. Imagine a wonderful tree, full of clear C7 lights - and every so often, randomly placed through the tree, a very few twinkling lights.

Twinkle light bulbs start to flash as they heat up - with about a one second on and a one second off rhythm. If you use just the right amount of twinkle lights, viewers won't necessarily see the twinkling action right away - they'll just see that you have a magical tree or two in your yard.

Steady on, twinkling, flashing. There are different ways to personalize your Christmas light display with light movement. Just consider it another part of your total design.

Ola Gjeilo with the CWU Chamber Choir: Ubi Caritas (1st version) - In the Moment (2 of 4)

Composer/pianist Ola Gjeilo joins the CWU Chamber Choir (Gary Weidenaar, director) in presenting Gjeilo's "Ubi Caritas". In mid-April, 2011, Ola spent 3 days on the Central Washington University Campus for a project in which he joined the choir in recording 3 of his compositions. On this video, Gjeilo adds an improvised accompaniment (in a one-take rendition) to his setting of the Ubi Caritas text -- which is published as an unaccompanied piece. Because of his view that improvising is a wonderful snapshot of artists "at that moment", the project was entitled "In the Moment". The other composition to which he created an improvised accompaniment was "Northern Lights". He also accompanied the choir on "The Ground", which includes CWU's resident faculty quartet -- the Kairos String Quartet. Here are the other "In the Moment" YouTube URL's: The project's trailer/preview video: www.youtube.com "The Ground": www.youtube.com Follow the choir on Facebook: www.facebook.com

This is a video of a 1997 Ford Explorer with burned out dash lights & an inaccurate gear select indicator. I show how to remove the instrument cluster, change the bulbs, & replace the shift indicator. While editing the video, I noticed that I couldn't stop saying "now". Sorry. You'll see what I mean at the end of the video.
